Indications and Dosage
Topical/Cutaneous
Nail fungal infections
Adult: As 1% cream or lotion: Apply once daily under occlusive dressing. For tinea pedis: As 1% cream or foam: Apply once daily for 4 wk.
Child: ≥12 yr For tinea pedis: As 1% foam: Apply once daily for 4 wk.

Topical/Cutaneous
Tinea corporis, Tinea cruris, Tinea versicolor
Adult: As 1% cream: Apply once daily for 2 wk.

Topical/Cutaneous
Cutaneous candidiasis
Adult: As 1% cream: Apply bid (morning and evening) for 2 wk.

Vaginal
Vaginal candidiasis
Adult: As pessary: Insert 150 mg pessary intravaginally at bedtime for 3 consecutive nights, or as single dose in long-acting preparations.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Patient using spermicidal contraceptives. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Burning and stinging sensation, pruritus, erythema, rash; contact dermatitis.
Patient Counseling Information
May damage latex contraceptive diaphragms and condoms, avoid use during treatment. Avoid contact w/ eyes, nose, mouth or other mucous membranes. Avoid heat, flame and smoking upon application of foam preparation.
Drug Interactions
May enhance anticoagulant effect of warfarin or acenocoumarol.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Econazole modifies the permeability of cell wall membrane in fungi; may interfere w/ RNA and protein synthesis, and lipid metabolism.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Insignificant (topical or vaginal).
