Lactulose
Indications/Uses
Constipation; haemorrhoids, post colonic/anal surgery; hepatic or precoma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Constipation Adult & adolescent Initially 15-45 mL daily. Maintenance: 15-30 mL daily. Childn 7-14 yr Initially 15 mL daily. Maintenance: 10-15 mL daily, 1-6 yr Initially 5-10 mL daily. Maintenance: 5-10 mL daily. Infant <1 yr Initially up to 5 mL daily. Maintenance: Up to 5 mL daily. Hepatic or pre-coma Adult Initially 30-45 mL tds.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Galactosaemia; GI obstruction, digestive perforation.
Special Precautions
Painful abdominal symptoms of undetermined cause prior to therapy. Diabetic patients w/ hepatic or pre-coma. Chronic & misuse. Galactose, lactose or fructose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Newborn to 18 yr w/ hepatic or pre-coma.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea. Flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Drugs w/ colon pH-dependent release (eg, 5-ASA agents) may be inactivated.
