Dexamethasone
Indications/Uses
RA, acute gouty arthritis, bronchial asthma, serum sickness, lupus, nodular arthritis, allergic dermatitis, pemphigus, bursitis, myositis, fibromyositis, inflammatory ophth diseases.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult 0.75 mg bd-qds. Daily dose may be reduced by 0.25-0.5 mg for every 4-5 days interval until min maintenance dose is attained or symptoms disappear. IV/IM inj 0.5-9 mg/day, depending on the disease state or condition. IA, intra-lesional or soft tissue inj 0.2-6 mg once every 3-5 days or once every 2-3 wk. Dose depends on lesion size or area being treated.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Systemic fungal infections, severe psychoneuroses.
Special Precautions
Ocular herpes simplex, psychic derangements, GI ulcer, osteoporosis, CHF, HTN. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort & ulceration, suppression of pituitary-adrenal function, fluid & electrolyte disturbances, wt gain, hyperglycaemia, glycosuria, increased susceptibility to infections, osteoporosis, myopathy, posterior subcapsular cataracts; growth retardation in childn, Cushing's syndrome, hirsutism.
