Doxazosin mesylate
Indications/Uses
HTN & initial agent to control BP. In hypertensive or normotensive patients w/ benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) & reduced urinary flow associated w/ BPH.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cardura tab HTN Initially 1 mg once daily for 1 or 2 wk, may be increased to 2 mg once daily for additional 1 or 2 wk. If needed, increase dose gradually at similar intervals to 4 mg, 8 mg & 16 mg. BPH Initially 1 mg once daily, may be increased to 2 mg & thereafter to 4 mg & up to max 8 mg w/ 1-2 wk intervals. Cardura XL CR tab Initially 4 mg once daily, may be increased to 8 mg once daily after 4 wk.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Cardura XL: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/divide.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to doxazosin, quinazolines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Postural hypotension/syncope. Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome. Priaprism. Concomitant use w/ PDE-5 inhibitors. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Cardura XL CR tab Preexisting severe GI narrowing.
Adverse Reactions
Vertigo, nausea, edema, asthenia, fatigue, malaise, dizziness, headache, postural hypotension, somnolence, syncope, rhinitis. Cardura XL CR tab Peripheral edema, abdominal & back pain, myalgia, bronchitis. HTN: Palpitation, tachycardia, dry mouth, chest pain, coughing, pruritus, cystitis, urinary incontinence. BPH: Dyspepsia, flu-like symptoms, resp tract infection, UTI, somnolence, dyspnea, hypotension.
Drug Interactions
Symptomatic hypotension w/ PDE-5 inhibitors. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, clarithromycin, indinavir, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazodone, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, telithromycin or voriconazole.
