Indications/Uses
Infections caused by susceptible bacteria, as an alternative drug in the treatment of infections in women caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae & Clostridium spp, syphilis, listeriosis, anthrax; adjuvant therapy in severe acne; treatment of asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis, treatment of infections caused by Mycobacterium marinum.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 200 mg, then 100 mg 12 hrly. Gonorrhoea Initially 200 mg, then 100 mg 12 hrly for min 4 days. Neisseria meningitidis carrier (asymptomatic) 100 mg 12 hrly for 5 days. Mycobacterium marinum infection 100 mg 12 hrly for 6-8 wk. Uncomplicated urethral, endocervical or rectal infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis & Ureaplasma urealyticum 100 mg bd for at least 7 days. Uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis in men 100 mg bd for 5 days. Childn >12 yr Initially 4 mg/kg followed by 2 mg/kg 12 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. Renal failure. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Prolonged or repeated therapy may result in bacterial or fungal overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. SLE, myasthenia gravis.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea & vomiting, diarrhoea, epigastric distress, esophageal ulcers, anogenital inflammatory lesions, rash, photosensitivity, dermal & mucosal blue-gray pigmentation, exacerbation of SLE & serum sickness-like reactions, severe headache, visual impairment & papilloedema, dizziness, vertigo, blood dyscrasias. Hypersensitivity.

Penicillins, antacids, Fe, anticoagulants, OC, methoxyflurane.
