Betamethasone
Indications/Uses
Acute & chronic rheumatic fever, RA, bronchial asthma, myositis, dermatitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 1.5-3 mg daily. Maintenance: 0.5-1.5 mg daily in divided doses, reduced by 0.25 mg every 2-3 days until the lowest dosage required to maintain an adequate clinical response.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Systemic fungal infections, peptic ulcer, osteoporosis, psychoses, severe psychoneuroses.
Special Precautions
GI ulcer, HTN, diabetes, CHF, history of severe affective disorders. Renal impairment. Pregnancy. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, peptic ulcer w/ possible perforation & haemorrhage, Cushing's syndrome, hirsutism, wt gain, fluid & electrolyte disturbances, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, impaired wound healing, menstrual irregularities, increased IOP, subcapsular cataract, skin thinning, growth suppression in childn.
