Oxymetazoline HCl
Indications/Uses
Relief of nasal congestion in acute colds, paranasal sinusitis & otitis media.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Nasal drops Childn >1 yr Instill 1-2 drops into each nostril bd-tds. Nasal spray Adult & childn >6 yr 2-3 sprays into each nostril bd.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline, benzalkonium Cl. Skin inflammation, nasal vestibule mucosa w/ incrustation (rhinitis sicca).
Special Precautions
Not to be used in patients w/ heart disease, high BP, thyroid disease, diabetes or difficulty in urination due to prostate gland enlargement. Chronic rhinitis. Avoid prolonged or excessive use (>4 wk). Concurrent treatment w/ MAOIs. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Not recommended during pregnancy. Lactation. Not to be used in childn <1 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Occasionally, local stinging or burning, sneezing, dry mouth & throat. Rebound congestion & drug-induced rhinitis (prolonged/excessive use).
Drug Interactions
Hypertensive crisis w/ MAOIs. Antihypertensives; TCAs, maprotiline.
