Contents
Per 4 g Na bicarbonate 1.76 g, anhydrous Na citrate 0.63 g, anhydrous citric acid 0.72 g, tartaric acid 0.89 g
Indications/Uses
Urinary alkalinization in treatment of mild UTI. Symptomatic relief of dysuria & gastric hyperacidity. Adjuvant in gout treatment w/ uricosurics & allopurinol. Enhance action of certain antibiotics especially sulfonamides.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Dissolve in 200 mL of water. Drink after the effervescence has settled down to avoid eructation.
Contraindications
Severe renal impairment & associated oliguria, azotaemia or anuria, untreated Addison's disease, acute dehydration; heat cramps & severe myocardial damage. Concomitant use w/ urinary tract antiseptics requiring acid urine eg, methenamine, mandelate & methenamine hippurate.
Special Precautions
Peptic ulcer, metabolic alkalosis. Not to be taken on Na-restricted diet. Renal abnormalities. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Na overload & hyperosmolarity; large doses of oral citrate salts may lead to GI events eg, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting & laxative effects.
Drug Interactions
Systemic alkalosis, promoted Ca stones development & hypernatraemia w/ antacids. Increased Al absorption possibly resulting in acute Al toxicity w/ Al-containing antacids. Reduced solubility of quinolones in urine. Increased urinary excretion & decreased therapeutic effects of salicylates.
