Indications/Uses
Urinary alkalinization in treatment of mild UTI. Symptomatic relief of dysuria & gastric hyperacidity. Adjuvant in gout treatment w/ uricosurics & allopurinol. Enhance action of certain antibiotics especially sulfonamides.
Na overload & hyperosmolarity; large doses of oral citrate salts may lead to GI events eg, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting & laxative effects.
Drug Interactions
Systemic alkalosis, promoted Ca stones development & hypernatraemia w/ antacids. Increased Al absorption possibly resulting in acute Al toxicity w/ Al-containing antacids. Reduced solubility of quinolones in urine. Increased urinary excretion & decreased therapeutic effects of salicylates.
