Aripiprazole
Indications/Uses
Acute & maintenance treatment of schizophrenia. Acute manic episodes associated w/ bipolar I disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Schizophrenia Initially 10 or 15 mg daily. Maintenance: 15 mg once daily. Bipolar mania Initially 15 or 30 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Suicidality, CV disorders, conduction abnormalities, tardive dyskinesia, extrapyramidal symptoms, NMS, seizure, hyperglycemia & DM, wt gain, dysphagia, pathological gambling. Patients w/ ADHD comorbidity. Lactose & phenylketonuria intolerance. Elderly w/ dementia-related psychosis.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, fatigue, tremor, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, somnolence, constipation, akathisia, extrapyramidal disorder, nasopharyngitis, dizziness, restlessness, increased wt & appetite. Pathological gambling, hypersexuality, impulse-control problems.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated effect of antihypertensives. Increased clearance & lowered blood levels by CYP3A4 inducers eg, carbamazepine. Inhibited elimination & increased blood levels by CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole or CYP2D6 inhibitors eg, quinidine, fluoxetine, paroxetine. Avoid use w/ alcohol. Other centrally-acting drugs.
