Ampicillin Na 1,000 mg, sulbactam Na 500 mg
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract infections eg, sinusitis, otitis media, epiglottitis; bacterial pneumonia; UTI, pyelonephritis; intra-abdominal infections eg, peritonitis, cholecystitis, endometritis, pelvic cellulitis; bacterial septicemia; skin, soft tissue, bone, joint & gonococcal infections. Prophylaxis to reduce post-op wound infections & sepsis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1.5-12 g daily in divided doses every 6 or 8 hr up to max: Sulbactam 4 g daily. Severe infections Up to 12 g. Moderate infections Up to 6 g. Mild infections 1.5-3 g. Prophylaxis of surgical infections 1.5-3 g at anesth induction, may be repeated every 6-8 hr. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1.5 g single dose. Childn, infant, neonate 150 mg/kg daily every 6 or 8 hr. Neonate 1st wk of life 75 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 12 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins & cephalosporins. Discontinue if superinfections occurs. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Mononucleosis. Severe renal impairment (CrCl ≤30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Inj site pain, phlebitis; anaemia, hemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, leukopenia; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, enterocolitis, pseudomembranous colitis; bilirubinemia, abnormal hepatic function, jaundice; anaphylactoid reactions, anaphylactic shock; rash, itching; transient elevations of ALT & AST.
Drug Interactions
Increased incidence of rashes w/ allopurinol. Substantial mutual inactivation w/ aminoglycosides. Additive effect w/ anticoagulants. Interfered bactericidal effects w/ bacteriostatic drugs eg, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, sulfonamides, tetracyclines. Reduced effectiveness of estrogen-containing OCs. Decreased MTX clearance & toxicity. Decreased renal tubular secretion by probenecid.
